Creating an online course is a good side income for a lot of instructors, but it takes a lot of work. I have created 6 courses before ChatGPT came out, and this month, I tried generating a course by using AI to save time. Creating a course takes multiple steps, and I will detail them below. Here's how it went:
1) Finding an idea and studying the market
Human work: 90%
AI work: 10%
As the free version of GPT does not have access to the internet or current trends, I had to research my course ideas this way:
a) Ask GPT to give me course ideas based on my skills and expertise
b) Ask GPT to sort the ideas based on potential course length, target audience, cost to produce, possible ROI.
c) I manually trimmed the list down to 5 items
d) I researched Skillshare, Udemy Insights, and SkillSuccess to study the competition and potential profits
e) I made the decision
2) Writing the course outline
Human work: 10%
AI work: 90%
a) I asked ChatGPT to generate 25 lecture ideas for my course, adapted to beginner level
b) I asked ChatGPT to sort them by difficulty
c) I added and deleted lectures manually, and made sure the course outline made sense
3) Writing the course content
Human work: 20%
AI work: 80%
a) I asked GPT to generate the content for each lecture, give me illustration ideas, and ideas on what the PPTX should look like
b) I corrected the script, added pictures and other relevant information
4) Generating the Pptx
Human work: 10%
AI work: 90%
a) I added SlidesAI.io into Google Slides and dumped my raw course content
b) Magic, PPTX is created
5) Filming
Human work: 99%
AI work: 1%
a) I recorded myself presenting the course, made sure my audio was clear, and recorded the screen capture too
b) Audacity removed the white noise for me
6) Editing
Human work: 80%
AI work: 20%
I used Real Time Render in Vegas Pro to save time while editing.
I also used both Vegas Pro and ClipChamp to be able to edit while Vegas Pro was rendering, and vice-versa.
7) Creating the landing page
Human work: 10%
AI work: 90%
a) I dumped all my course information in GPT and asked it to create a course description, target student, pre-requesites, course goals, and to add SEO keywords in it.
b) I copy pasted everything into each learning platform I teach on
8) Creating visuals
Human work: 20%
AI work: 80%
I let Canva guide me to create visuals, course presentation card, and more. The AI tool in Canva suggested me elements and fonts and saved me a lot of time.
9) Uploading the course
Human work: 100%
AI work: 0%
No cheating there, you gotta drag and drop your lectures where they belong.
10) Marketing the course
Human work: 50%
AI work: 50%
a) I asked ChatGPT to prepare a course release marketing schedule and explain it step by step
b) I manually decided how I will follow this guide and studied Facebook Marketing or joined Facebook groups when needed
c) I followed the plan GPT gave me
Conclusion:
I saved a huge amount of time with AI tools, for very cheap, but I did not include the 3-4 hours of studying expert prompt engineering before creating the course. Those 3-4 hours will benefit me on the long term.
